What is Sensory-Friendly Clothing?
Sensory issues affect a large number of children. You may have come across the term sensory in conversations around neurodiversity. That’s because many neurodivergent individuals, including autistic children and those with ADHD, experience sensory sensitivities. And that’s exactly where our journey began. (You can read more about our story here.)
Sensory-friendly clothing is exactly what it sounds like – clothing that’s kind to the senses. While the main focus is on how it feels, sight and sound also play a role. Every piece of Känna clothing is thoughtfully designed to be as gentle as possible: seams are kept to a minimum and made soft and flat; we use breathable, organic cotton whenever we can; and all our garments are completely tag-free.
For children with sensory challenges, the feel of clothing can be overwhelming, even painful. Our sensory-friendly clothing is designed with the most sensitive child in mind.
Känna clothing is also a great fit for children with PANS or PANDAS, as well as for those with skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
Because sensory-friendly clothing hasn't been widely available, many sensitive children are forced to wear clothes that make them uncomfortable. Parents often go to great lengths – cutting out tags, turning clothes inside out to avoid seams – just to help their kids tolerate what they wear. We've even heard from families who rarely leave the house because suitable clothing is so hard to find.
At Känna, we're here to change that.
We believe every child deserves to feel comfortable in their clothes. Free to move, play, and explore without discomfort holding them back.
In fact, we believe all children's clothing should be sensory-friendly. As adults, most of us have experienced clothing discomfort—tight waistbands, scratchy fabrics, irritating necklines. But children shouldn't have to put up with that. They've got more important things to do!
